NEWS
Proof that the most amazing images can sometimes come from the most unusual sources. Here is a sink full of inky squeegee's piled up ready for washing up, after a busy morning of screen printing with year 10. Take a look next week at the year 10 section to see what they have been up to.
If you are free one week end, take a trip to The Museum of Brands and Packaging. The collection of Robert Opie is a fantastic trip through history as shown through everyday packaging. Year 10 visited this unique place as part of their research into packaging design.
Year 11
Lent Term 2018
The start of the new term brings new challenges for Year 11. The exam papers have arrived and observational drawing from a primary source has begun.
Some more fantastic work by Year 11 this week, this time their responses to other artists work.
Michaelmas term 2017
Year 11 are busy with the start of their coursework At the moment they are gathering ideas and recording from a primary source. Here are some of their initial research drawings.
Some great progress from Year 11 over the half term break. Responses to other artists work have enabled students to develop their own ideas. They are now ready to experiment with media and work towards their final piece of coursework.
Congratulations to the Year 11 students who have completed their coursework. Here is a little peek at what they have been up to over the past weeks.
Year 10
Lent Term 2018
This term Year 10 are tackling a graphic communication project. They have been tasked to design a label for a new smoothie. As well as the design of the label, they must also think of a name, shape of container and design the whole packaging. They have started off by looking at typography styles. Here are some examples of the very popular Zentangle style looked at this week.
Here Year 10 have been researching typography from various decades and presenting their work in a way that captures the mood of the era.
Here are some of the screen prints created by year 10 this week and some action shots. You never know what is going to happen with this creative process and each result has been a real surprise!
Michaelmas term 2017
Inspired by the work of Jim Dine, Year 10 have started a project called "Tools of the Trade". Starting of with the super important skill of observational drawing, they have been looking very carefully at the structures, textures and details of these everyday tools. Using pencil they have created these tonal observational drawings, which also pay close attention to the negative spaces as well as the positive.
This week, a bit more of a challenge! Using a mid tone paper, chalk, charcoal and chunky graphite, these drawings have a much bolder composition. Next week colour.....
A bit of energy in some pastel work!
Aya says- 'It's really impressive how the Year 10's have managed to capture the contrast between the textures and created very dramatic compositions!'
This week Year 10 will be learning about the rules of composition. The subject will be this very challenging still life.
Year 10 Watercolour challenge! This week students start this tricky still life that contains reflections, layers and distortion. They also contain complementary colours, one with red and green, the other blue and orange. Suki says ' Let the colours flow freely for maximum effect.'
Check back next week to see the results.
Year 9
Lent Term 2018
A little peak into the work started by Year 9 this term. Look out for some beautiful observational drawings of natural forms that pay particular attention to tone, texture and composition.
Some of the beautiful natural forms studies completed this week.
The natural forms have turned into complex pattern and are currently being painted onto silk. This is a very tricky process as you need a steady hand and a careful selection of colours. Year 9 are amazing at this and so far they have created some stunning effects with colour and line.
The ties have been cut out and stitched together. This is a tricky job as only part of it can be done on the machine. The whole back seam must be done by hand!
The finished result looks stunning!
Michaelmas Term 2017
Year 9 are exploring the theme of exaggerated proportion. They have looked at the work of artists that use extreme proportion and talked about how it would feel to come face to face with a large portrait by Chuck Close or a sculpture by Ron Mueck. They also discussed how scale in buildings and public sculptures have been used in the past, to show power and wealth. They have experimented with found images from magazines to create compositions that play with proportion and now have turned their attention to their eyes. Using a mirror they looked carefully at the structure and detail of their eye and created large tonal drawings which are now 'keeping an eye' on things out of the windows of the art room.
This week Year 9 have been developing their painting skills. Again using their own eye as a subject, they have used acrylic paint to carefully create an observational study. They paid particular attention to colour mixing. The results are here!
Year 9 worked hard this year to create these fantastic paintings. The theme of 'exaggerated proportion' was explored in an more surreal way and each student came up with a unique composition. Some are funny and extraordinary, some imaginative and beautifully painted. Great work Year 9, you are a talented lot!
Year 8
Lent Term 2018
The start of a new term brings a new project. This term Year 8 will continue exploring some of the more challenging aspects of creativity and take a look at abstract art.

This week Year 8 created work in response to music. Percussion instruments were played and the marks and colours were put down on the paper to try to visually communicate the shape and colour of the sound. There was also some work done using Kandinsky's Concentric Circles.
Here are the fantastic textile products created over the past two weeks. They show a clear connection with the research work and demonstrate good blending of colours and use of masking tape and stencils. A very effective result. The general verdicts from the class was that Abstract is hard!
Michaelmas term 2017
Year 8 are a lively bunch so the theme of 'Movement" really suits them. To start things off they looked at the work of Jean Metzinger "Au Velodrome". Analysis was made of how the artist created the feeling of movement in the painting, paying particular attention to composition, colour and technique.
A recreation of the painting was made by the class as a group project, each student taking a portion of the image and using mixed media to create the colours and textures.

The finished work. It almost fits together really well. Good job Year 8!
Here are the completed paintings by Year 8. They show all the techniques learned over the weeks and give a fantastic sense of movement, action and drama.
This week Year 8 have looked at the Futurists. Students have started work on a new. dynamic piece of work that uses a movable figure to create shapes and movement.
Year 7
Lent Term 2018
This term Year 7 are learning some new textile skills. Here are some examples of embroidery stitches, buttons, sequins and tassels.
Putting their new skills to use, Year 7 have been busy making something. Check back soon to see the finished product!
Almost there! Should be finished next week.
All done!!
Michaelmas Term 2017
When a big box of redundant keys was presented to the art room, Year 7 decided that they would be a good way to unlock some creativity. Yes, that's a pun....
The keys were used as a template to draw round and create a pattern. The pattern was developed by shading the positive or negative spaces producing a distinctive image. This will be turned into a lino print next week.
This week, working on the lino. Using a bench hook keeps hands safe!
Some great lino printing from Year 7 this week. Next week colour!
